Description

The activities of the Medical Physics group are devoted to the biomedical applications of particle and nuclear physics. The medical physics group combines basic research on innovative solutions for medical applications in different fields with a strong component of technology transfer including licensed industrial and intellectual property rights and clinical application of the systems and methods developed.

We are committed to help in solving medical challenges based on High Energy and Nuclear physics technology, including, precision medicine, enhancements in health care quality, and cost reduction by means of innovative devices and applications using large scale Machine Learning Applications. The group activities include detector development and instrumentation for medical imaging, as well as image science (image reconstruction and algorithmics, modelling of image formation and degradation phenomena, Monte-Carlo simulations, etc.). The group activities also cover developments in particle accelerating techniques, beam instrumentation, detector developments for dose monitoring and imaging for hadron therapy.

We are relevant actors in the main CSIC challenges from the white book, in particular Challenges in Biomedicine and Health, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Data Science where we have a consolidated position, participating in PTI-Salud Global (diagnose area) and very well considered in the Artificial Intelligence area at global level, and other research centres.

Established clinical contacts through funded projects:

The CSIC group has two lines, IRIS, dedicated mainly to develop imaging systems, and 42 is the answer, dedicated to improve radiation detectors using artificial intelligence.
